I hadn't planned on this 5k at all. Actually, I haven't really been planning on
any many 5ks. I'm not trying to sound snobby at all. I do enjoy 5ks. It's just a lack of confidence on my part - meaning when I run a race, I want to PR each time. I know that's not the goal, but I want to see progress. When I don't see progress, I get down on myself. After a bad 5k this past winter, I declared I wasn't going to do anymore 5ks. Of course, my friends and family laughed at me. They know me best and they knew I wouldn't stick to this unrealistic declaration.

and we're off! |
My thoughts about doing a 5k turned to - if I run with Izzy in the jogger, I'll have a new challenge and won't be chasing after that PR. Oh, and running with Izzy should make me stronger, right? But an incredible opportunity came up (
hint, review/giveaway coming soon) so that meant trekking up to Farmington for the Run To Prevent Child Abuse 5k.
If you need anymore hints - check out the pants I'm sporting.

holy- where did that hill come from? |
Farmington isn't too far from my house, maybe a 50 minute drive. I remember Farmington being flat. But maybe that's because I went to college in this cute little town and the walk from my dorm to the bar was flat. I don't remember venturing into the hills of Farmington ever. I didn't really know they existed - until this race!

off again! 0.6 miles to go... |
However, I will say it wasn't the hills that were the most challenging. It was running with the jogger. First of all, it was a windy 30F, which meant bundling up Izzy with a quilt. This also meant that she kicked it off of her several times during the race and I'd have to stop and pick it up. Fun. Also, somehow the break decided to stick. It was harder than ever to power through that. When I finally saw Ward at mile 2.5, he jumped in to save the day. I told him the problem and he started running with me, took the jogger, fixed it while running (ie disconnected the brake all together) and then gave it back to me. Yes, he is that good. If I had known that the last .6 miles was a steep downhill, I would have just kept the break on. I struggled keeping up with the jogger and really pounded my legs trying to slow down enough to have some kind of control. Oh well, lesson learned.

Something about small races & hand written results is just awesome! |
I just noticed that #11 was an old professor of mine. That's too funny!
This race turned out to be the most challenging 5k I've run yet and I did it with Izzy. As it turns out, we made a great team and actually placed - 3rd place women (yes, women - we are a team!).
My garmin time read 25:57 but the "official" results read 26:09. Does it really matter? The most important part is that we did it together, Ward rescued the day & Tucker cheered us on. So, now I'm changing my statement, okay. I'll do more 5ks, but I would really like to do them with Izzy in the jogger. Oh and I need to mention, we were the only ones with a jogger.

completed wiped out |
You definitely brought out your bad-ass quality for this. You rock!
ReplyDeleteYou are too sweet!
DeleteYou rock, Mama! Especially in those tights. I love 'em!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Keep checking back this week for more info about those awesome tights!
DeleteGreat job, especially with the stroller!! You are awesome!
ReplyDeleteAwwwee - thanks!
DeleteTHAT is an unreal time in general but with a stroller?! Dang momma you are tough! Congratulations.. I love the medal
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lisa! I really think it was the capris. They gave me "cheetah" speed!
DeleteAmazing!!!! Congrats! You rocked it! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kierston!
DeleteThere is a small part of me that is disgusted by the fact you can run a 5K that much faster than me with the handicap of a jogger. Not the first person to do it, but a bit demoralizing to this slow runner - and I'm sure a few people at your race were like "Seriously?" when you passed them. :) Congrats to both (all) of you. Love the team effort!
ReplyDeleteOh - I get it! I've been "strollered" quite a bit before. I always hated it too & believe me, these runners did not hold back - I heard people say "really? wtf?"
DeleteThat's super impressive with stopping, stroller fixing, well just stroller running in general! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Abbi!!
DeleteNice job on the race!! I'm with you on 5Ks. I don't like them to be honest. I always want to PR, to push to the limit so they basically suck LOL. I need to change my mentality obviously.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could borrow Izzy and the jogger and take on a new kind of 5k challenge? Or let go of that PR chasing. But it's so hard!
DeleteGreat job jen!! You are seriously fast and tough!! And Ward is a mechanical genius. :)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say genius - that would inflate his ego just a bit too much. He's just better with the jogger and the workings of it than I am! : Thanks, Michelle!
DeleteThose running capri's are CRAZY!!!! Love them :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd what a race, awesome.
I am in love with them too. If I could get away with wearing them to school I would! :)
DeleteGreat job--even with some technical difficulties. :) And wow, look at those pants! :D Can't wait to see more!!
ReplyDeleteMore details coming soon!!!
DeleteLove the pants!!! You did awesome even with all your technical difficulties!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nancy! It was a fun challenge - but felt like the longest 5k ever in my life!
DeleteYou are one tough chick! And that husband of yours...is he one of the incredibles? haha
ReplyDeleteI have the utmost respect for runners pushing strollers. It's hard enough for me to carry myself! Congrats on your 3rd place finish.
Can't wait to hear more about those wild capris!
It's a completely different kind of running for sure. I found myself pushing her ahead of me at times and then just catching up to her so I could pump both arms. :)
DeleteNot sure I could love those pants any more than I do right now, they were the first thing I noticed, I want some!
ReplyDeleteGreat job with a challenging 5k, you rock! Are those from Funky Runner
They are actually made from a Maine company in Farmington - even better, they are made by Ward's high school coach and her business partner (also a very experienced runner/coach). They have some fantastic stuff. The big reveal is coming soon!
DeleteGreat job. I can't believe you ran that fast uphill with a stroller. Plus with the brakes and the blanket issues. You rocked it!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!! Believe me, I didn't run fast on the uphills - I just really focused on pushing myself on the slight inclines and downhills. Honestly, on the uphills I wanted to walk.
DeleteI am so impressed! That is really speedy and to be pushing a jogger up those hills is amazing! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch, Suz!!!
DeleteGreat job Jen and Izzy!! Congratulations on your 3rd place finish!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Jamie!!!
DeleteNice job!!! I'm always amazed by people who can actually race with a stroller... and the number of times I get passed by strollers...
ReplyDeleteI see some more races with Izzy in the future - I better squeeze them in while I can - she will only be little enough for this for so long!
DeleteThat's awesome! You (and Izzy) rocked that 5K! The pants are super cool and must have given you extra strength to push the jogger up and down those hills, hahaha! I remember doing a 5K once pushing a jogger that had I borrowed from a friend so I could take my little boy with me, it had a crazy wheel that wouldn't go straight and I could barely run with it and ended having to walk most of it just to be able to get that jogger across the finish line! Fun experiences we have with kids, huh? Great job!
ReplyDeleteKids bring on a whole new level of excitement and challenges for sure!!! :) Yes - it was the pants for sure. You'll want a pair, I know it!!!
DeleteOoh Giveaways fun! I love reading about your runs, great time with a stroller, heck I've never hit that without one....
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the giveaway!
That's awesome! I can't wait until I run a race with my little guy. :) I don't think I could do a 5k that fast w/o a stroller!
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Jen!! I'm so impressed that you placed with the jogger-- you were moving!!
